Details

Today, the Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Andriy Pyshnyi, announced the expansion of the national currency's denomination range.

The banknote series of the national currency is not something static for central banks of any country. The economy changes. Incomes, prices, the volume of cash in circulation, and the behavior of the population change. And the banknote series of the national currency must correspond to these changes. Just as in 2019, economic preconditions led to the appearance of the 1,000 hryvnia banknote, in 2026 they formed a justified need for the introduction of the 2,000 hryvnia banknote into circulation

 explained Andriy Pyshnyi.

"The new banknote will be put into cash circulation from September 4, 2026," the NBU stated.

What the 2000 hryvnia banknote looks like

The banknote honors Vasyl Stus – a Ukrainian poet of the sixties generation, translator, publicist, prose writer, thinker, literary scholar, literary critic, human rights activist, political prisoner of the USSR, member of the Ukrainian Helsinki Group, one of the most active representatives of the Ukrainian dissident movement and a fighter for Ukraine's independence in the 20th century, laureate of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize (posthumously, 1991), Hero of Ukraine (posthumously, 2005).

The obverse of the new banknote features a portrait of Vasyl Stus, and the reverse features an image of the building of the Faculty of Philology of Donetsk National University, where he studied.

"Vasyl Stus became a symbol of the indomitability of the Ukrainian spirit, the embodiment of personal responsibility to the people, the state, and future generations," Andriy Pyshnyi emphasized during a press briefing at the National Bank.

The banknote also features a line from his poem written in captivity: "And the candle flickers with the dawn, which our great-grandson will call day."

These words are written in a font created based on the graphics of Heorhiy Narbut – the creator of the Ukrainian state style of 1917–1919, the author of the first hryvnias and shahs of the times of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

The use of this font emphasizes that the banknote is a visual document of Ukrainian statehood.

In terms of design, the new banknote follows the modified hryvnia banknotes of the 2014–2019 model. It differs in size and color from banknotes of other denominations.

About the banknote's security

The banknote contains over 20 security features – both paper protection and innovative printing security elements that reliably protect it from counterfeiting.

"This is the world's first banknote to use a unique 'window' security thread AnimaTM Colour – polychromatic and animated – to enhance security. The design of the thread was developed by order of the National Bank in a blue-yellow color scheme. When the angle of the banknote is changed, a motion effect and image change are observed – the Trident changes to the hryvnia sign. This thread, as a new product, was presented by the manufacturer only at the end of April 2026, and now we have already implemented it on the new banknote," Pyshnyi said.
