UEFA: Mircea Lucescu's memory to be honored with a minute of silence before European cup matches

The legendary coach, who died of heart disease, will be honored at European cup matches. UEFA and the Romanian federation expressed condolences over the loss of the figure.

Before the matches of the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, a minute of silence will be observed in memory of Mircea Lucescu, the former coach of Donetsk "Shakhtar" and Kyiv "Dynamo," who passed away yesterday after a long heart illness. This was reported by the UEFA press service, according to UNN

European and world football have lost an exceptional figure whose influence, status, and legacy will endure for future generations. Mircea Lucescu was one of the true originals of the game – a man of rare footballing intellect, extraordinary dignity, and passion, whose contribution to the sport is difficult to measure in words alone 

- said UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. 

He noted that throughout his extraordinary career, he earned the admiration and respect of the entire football community through his knowledge, leadership, and deep commitment to the true values of the game, and his presence shaped teams, inspired players and colleagues, and left a lasting mark on football far beyond the sidelines. 

This is a black day for Romania and for world football. We have lost a man who lived every second of his life through and for football. Mircea Lucescu was not just a coach, but a mentor for entire generations of players. He was a man who loved this sport more than anything in life, and his influence on our football is invaluable 

- said Răzvan Burleanu, President of the Romanian Football Federation. 

As reported by the association, in honor of Mircea Lucescu's memory, a minute of silence will be observed at all upcoming matches under UEFA's auspices.

Mircea Lucescu, the former coach of Donetsk "Shakhtar" and Kyiv "Dynamo," passed away at the age of 81 after a long heart illness.

On March 29, Mircea Lucescu was urgently hospitalized at the University Hospital after feeling unwell during a technical meeting before the national team's training session.

On Tuesday, April 7, the first matches of the Champions League quarter-finals took place. Real Madrid lost to Bayern with a score of 1:2, and Arsenal minimally defeated Sporting. 

Today, April 8, at 10:00 PM Kyiv time, the second matches of the Champions League quarter-finals begin, where Catalan "Barcelona" will meet Madrid "Atletico," and Illya Zabarnyi's "PSG" will host English "Liverpool."
