On Thursday, rescuers reached eight cities that had been cut off from the outside world since last Sunday due to destroyed infrastructure and power grids.
“As of 12:00 p.m. on August 1, roads, electricity and communications in eight cities in Jixing that were hardest hit by Typhoon Gaemi have been mostly restored, and search and rescue operations have made significant progress,” local authorities confirmed to Xinhua.
Rescue operations are still ongoing, local authorities said.
In the wake of severe flooding in Hunan province, China has raised the level of emergency response to better support local disaster relief efforts and ensure basic life safety for affected people, the country's Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Thursday.
Typhoon Gaemi hit China on the evening of Thursday, July 25, with wind speeds of 110 km/h. According to weather forecasters, the amount of precipitation could range from 150 to 250 mm, and up to 400 mm in the highlands and on the coast.
