Three lionesses aged between three and 15 years died within a week at Tama Zoo in western Tokyo. Autopsies showed that all the animals suffered from dehydration and multiple organ failure, indicating a possible impact of the heat.

According to the publication, the three-year-old lioness Mugi lost her appetite on July 19, and the next day she could no longer stand up. Staff provided her with artificial ventilation, cooling with water, and also administered subcutaneous fluids, liver tonics, and vitamins, but on July 28 the animal died. Just a few days later, on July 31, the 11-year-old lioness Ichigo also died, and on Sunday, the 15-year-old Luena. The zoo reported that the final cause of death of the animals will be determined after receiving the results of the tests.
