The U.S. Supreme Court issued two rulings that allow the Trump administration to cancel humanitarian aid to Haitians and Syrians and block the entry of migrants to apply for asylum. The White House announced the complete closure of doors for asylum seekers.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday issued two rulings that together will allow the Trump administration to advance the U.S. president's plan to transform the asylum system and deport immigrants from some of the world's most troubled countries, with the White House declaring "America's door is closing" for asylum seekers, UNN reports citing The Washington Post.

The rulings affect both immigrants who have lived in the United States for years and those still seeking entry.

In one ruling, the court determined that the Trump administration can revoke humanitarian aid for Haitians and Syrians. This decision could threaten the deportation of all 1.3 million people who received Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Many have already had their deportation protection revoked but have pending lawsuits in court, which will now be affected by this ruling.

Another ruling concerned a policy known as "metering," which allows border officials to block migrants from entering the United States to apply for asylum. This practice allows officials to limit the number of people seeking to enter U.S. territory at a port of entry and was first used during the second Obama administration. It is one of several measures at the Trump administration's disposal to prevent people from entering and applying for asylum.

These rulings will have a practical impact on many migrants, their families, business owners, and communities. They also highlight how Trump is using executive power to radically change some of the most important principles of the country's immigration system, the publication notes.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller directly stated what he believes this ruling means.

"America’s doors are closed, fully, to asylum seekers," he said. He called all asylum applications at the border "fake," denying that they ever face persecution based on race, religion or ethnicity.

After Thursday's rulings, Stephen Miller, the architect of much of Trump's immigration policy, said he expects the deportation of people who lose their TPS status.

"If you no longer have status in this country, then you should be deported," he said.

The U.S. Supreme Court's rulings will effectively make it more difficult for many immigrants to legally remain in the United States or seek entry in hopes of eventually obtaining legal status through asylum, the publication notes.
