Pleso has found that the water on 15 Kyiv beaches does not meet sanitary and hygienic requirements. Swimming is prohibited due to high levels of bacteriological contamination that can cause intestinal infections.

Pleso conducted a study of water quality on 15 beaches in the capital and found that the samples did not meet sanitary and hygienic requirements. This was reported by the Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation of the Kyiv City State Administration, UNN reports .

Details

Despite the fact that the beach season in the capital was not announced in 2024, Pleso regularly conducts research and updates water quality monitoring in places of mass recreation in Kyiv's water bodies.

Last week we checked the following beaches in Kyiv: Zolotyi, Predmostnaya Slobodka, Chortoryi, Natalka, Tsentralnyi, Molodizhnyi, Detskyi, Venetsia, Veselka, Galernyi, Telbin, Raiduha, Troyeschyna, Verbnyi, Pushcha-Vodytsia.

According to the results of sanitary-microbiological and sanitary-chemical studies, water samples at these beaches do not meet sanitary and hygienic requirements, and therefore swimming is prohibited.

For example, the LPC (lacto-positive E. coli) index in water samples indicates the general bacteriological contamination of water bodies. E. coli multiplies most actively in water bodies in the heat and after heavy rainfall. If ingested, E. coli can cause intestinal infections (the most common symptoms are nausea and diarrhea), inflammation of the urinary tract, genitals, and more serious diseases.

Symptoms of an acute intestinal infection that require immediate medical attention:

  • dry mouth and throat;
  • Fever accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting;
  • cramping pain in the abdomen;
  • little or no urination.

Recall

In Ukraine, 35.2% of water samples from surface water bodies did not meet microbial contamination standards, with regional differences in beach water quality according to the Center for Public Health.
