Weapons and the economy will dominate Thursday's meeting between the governments of Poland and Ukraine, but we also need to resolve some of our historical issues. This was stated in the PAP studio by Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland Andrzej Sheyna, UNN reports.
Details
A meeting between the governments of Poland and Ukraine is scheduled for March 28 in Warsaw. According to Sheyna, the meeting will cover many issues, including agriculture and military support.
The meeting may also discuss Ukraine's accession to the EU.
"The issues that, in my opinion, should already be discussed are the issues of accession. Because Ukraine is already in advanced negotiations, and we are ready to cooperate with Ukraine. We will help in this," Sheyna emphasized.
According to the deputy head of diplomacy, the previous government's mistake was to assume that there were no controversial issues in Poland's relations with Ukraine. Therefore, an important element of the meeting in Warsaw should be the signing of a protocol of disagreements.
"We will have to be honest about where we can help and where we need to prepare reports on non-compliances. The biggest mistake of the PiS government was that they deceived Poles and perhaps themselves that there were no problems, for example, with agriculture. It was only in the last part of the process that action was taken," he said.
According to Sheyna, it is necessary to build relations with Ukraine on concrete actions, because, as he said, it is important that "Polish-Ukrainian relations are unfrozen, there is an honest conversation and negotiations, which did not happen during the PiS rule. Then there were only gestures," he emphasized.
"Assertiveness means that when we disagree on certain issues, we tell our partner clearly and respectfully," he explained.
One of the issues that may be raised during the meeting between the governments of Poland and Ukraine is historical issues. According to Sheyna, discussing these topics will help clarify the situation.
"We also need to resolve certain historical issues between Poland and Ukraine. They are not the most important today, but they also allow us to clarify the situation on many issues," he said.
He added that someone from the Foreign Ministry will definitely attend the meeting, but it is not known whether it will be Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski himself.
Details of the meeting in Warsaw are still being finalized, and many issues are being kept secret for security reasons.
At the end of February, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a meeting between the governments of Poland and Ukraine on March 28 in Warsaw. This was in response to the call by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for a meeting of the two governments on the common border.
