On October 17, 2022, the Council of the European Union decided to establish EUMAM Ukraine with an initial duration of two years. The strategic objective of the mission is to contribute to the enhancement of the military capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to restore and effectively conduct operations to enable Ukraine to defend its territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, to exercise its sovereignty effectively and to protect civilians from Russia's armed aggression.

"As of today, EUMAM Ukraine has trained 63,000 soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which is equivalent to ten brigades. In the coming months, the mission will train another 15,000 soldiers, bringing the total number of trained soldiers to 75,000 by the end of winter 2024/2025," the European institution said.
