Swedish police have seized the vessel Caffa at the request of another state. It is suspected of illegally transporting grain from occupied Crimea.

Swedish police have seized the vessel Caffa, which has been in the country's waters for about two months, at the request of a foreign state. This was reported by SVT, according to UNN.

Details

According to the Swedish Prosecutor's Office, the case is related to a request for international legal assistance being handled by the National Unit against International and Organized Crime. The vessel has been officially arrested, but details remain limited.

Parallel investigation and classified materials

The vessel's Russian captain was previously detained, but he was released a week ago, and the investigation against him has effectively been closed. At the same time, police are continuing a separate proceeding regarding the vessel itself, which is characterized as "very sensitive."

This is a very delicate subject as it concerns another country

– said a source familiar with the case.

The case is being heard by the Ystad District Court, where a hearing regarding the arrest is expected in the spring. According to lawyer Niklas Söderberg, the case materials will remain classified.

The specific state that initiated the arrest has not been disclosed. Previously, the Swedish Coast Guard reported that the vessel was suspected of involvement in transporting grain from occupied Crimea.

Lawyer Per-Olov Håkansson, representing the shipowner, stated that the defense would appeal the seizure decision.

This is a process that is running parallel to the issue of the prohibition of use. We will challenge the prosecutor's claims at the next hearing

– he said.

The vessel Caffa was stopped on March 6 after the Coast Guard boarded it. According to preliminary data, the reason for the operation was that the ship, with a Russian crew, was moving under a foreign flag in Swedish waters.
