Details

In Slovenia, the websites of government agencies, including the president of the republic, have been targeted by cyberattacks. The government's Information Security Office announced today that the attacks were DDOS attacks. However, there was no unauthorized access to the system - it is stated that it was "not a classic cyber incident and there was no unauthorized access to the system.

The National Cybersecurity Response Center SI-CERT confirmed that the cyberattacks had been stopped, but the agency did not comment on who was behind the increase in traffic on Slovenia's cyber infrastructure.

DDoS is a volumetric attack, which means that a large amount of data is flooded onto the victim. Usually, a large number of huge UDP packets from different sources are used. Distributed denial of service attacks are carried out using a botnet of infected foreign computers that are unwittingly used to carry out the attack in sync. DDoS attacks have been monitored by the response centers of the EU and NATO member states since the beginning of Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.

It is now known that the Russian hacker group Cyber Army Russia Reborn has come forward and claimed responsibility for the attack. They claim to have attacked government services because Slovenia joined the Czech Republic's initiative to purchase artillery ammunition for Ukraine. It is not yet known whether the group is indeed responsible for the attack on the side of the Slovenian president.
