Scientists have reported new discoveries about the Shroud of Turin (a linen shroud in which some believe Jesus was buried).

After analyzing the fabric using a new technique, the researchers confirmed that the material was made about 2,000 years ago, in the time of Jesus.

It is indicated that the study used the method of wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS).

The analysis, which measured the natural aging of the flax cellulose, involved comparing the shroud samples to other first-century cloths found in Israel. The shroud was compared to linen samples that were made between 1260 and 1390 AD. It is noted that none of them were compatible.

The team of researchers found that the Shroud of Turin was probably stored at a temperature of about 72.5 degrees Fahrenheit and a relative humidity of about 55 percent for about 13 centuries.

Scientists have come to the conclusion that the cloth on the Shroud really belongs to the time of Jesus, which is about 2000 years ago.

The data profiles were fully compatible with similar measurements obtained on a linen sample dating, according to historical records, from 55-74 AD found in Masada (Herod's famous fortress overlooking the Dead Sea in Israel)

- the study says.

The results of the new study are likely to pose a significant challenge to previous studiesthat dated the shroud to the Middle Ages.
