The genetically modified dogs, named Bailey and Alfie, were developed by Kindred Companion Sciences. One of its founders, geneticist Matt Walker, who is himself allergic to dogs, was able to interact with the animals without symptoms after their genomes were altered.

Researchers note that the technology still requires lengthy testing. Scientists need to assess the long-term effects of genetic editing on the animals’ health and find a way to make the development accessible for widespread use.

This opens the door for many more people to be able to have pets. On the negative side, it could discourage people from adopting homeless and unwanted animals
According to AP, scientists have previously attempted to create hypoallergenic pets using cloning and CRISPR technology, but the new study is one of the first to demonstrate the successful creation of viable genetically edited dogs.
