Details
Due to the ongoing unrest in Mozambique, many people are seeking refuge in neighboring Malawi, with more than 2,000 Mozambican families applying for asylum this week.
Mozambique has been gripped by violent protests for about two months now. Dozens of people have been killed in the unrest that followed disputed elections in October. In the elections in October, the long-time ruling Frelimo party won power in the southeastern African country. Opposition groups accuse the party of fraud. The decision of the Constitutional Council of Mozambique to approve the election results on Monday provoked new demonstrations.
The monitoring group Platforum Decide estimates that the death toll has reached 125 since the court ruling and 252 since the end of October.
Also, on Wednesday, at least 33 people were killed in a prison riot in Mozambique, and more than 1,500 prisoners escaped; checkpoints were set up in some areas.
