Lithuanian President Nausėda said that the deployment of nuclear weapons in Poland would be an element of deterrence against Russia and would meet Europe's security expectations.

The Alliance's decision to deploy nuclear weapons in Poland will contribute to deterrence and meet Europe's security expectations, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda believes, UNN reports citing Delfi.

Recently, there have certainly been events that have increased the presence of military power in our neighborhood, including the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons. Unfortunately, this is a reality today, both in the Kaliningrad region and, as far as we know, in Belarus

- Nauseda said.

Therefore, according to Nauseda, the idea of deploying nuclear weapons is "not an incitement, not a threat to Russia, but again, it is an element of the deterrence system" that should play a significant role of deterrence and strength.

The Lithuanian president wondered why Poland's statements about nuclear weapons have attracted so much attention in the international arena.  According to him, Warsaw has raised this issue before.  "I was a little surprised that this statement of the President of the Republic of Poland was reacted to as something new," the President admitted.

"We not only talked about this aspect, but also shared our thoughts on the possible consequences or implications of this aspect. In any case, the Russian propaganda mill is working, and naturally, in such cases, there are always threats from them. But these threats only show that this idea is indeed a significant deterrent and naturally makes Kremlin politicians nervous," Nauseda concluded.
