For travel with animals to the EU, health certificates are now required instead of old passports. The changes apply to non-commercial transport of cats and dogs.

People traveling with pets to European Union (EU) countries will need a certificate for their animals under new rules. This was reported by the BBC, writes UNN.

The government of Guernsey announced that all EU pet passports expired on April 22, and new national legislation means that pet owners must apply for an animal health certificate.

Chief Veterinary Officer David Chamberlain said that pet owners whose primary residence is Guernsey must obtain this certificate from their veterinarian before each trip.

The changes apply to all non-commercial transportation of dogs, cats, and ferrets.

Chamberlain added that pet owners in Guernsey whose animals were acquired in the EU can continue to use EU passports for travel to and from the island.

"If your primary residence is in the EU, you can use or continue to use a pet passport issued by an EU member state for travel between the EU and Guernsey," he said.
