The leader of the Hungarian opposition party "Tisza," Péter Magyar, announced that he is initiating a meeting with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Berehove, Zakarpattia. According to him, this could be a symbolic step toward restarting Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. Magyar wrote about this on Facebook, reports UNN.
The politician reported that he held a meeting with the Mayor of Berehove, Zoltán Babják, who told him about the situation of the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia and the consequences of the war.
"I am initiating a meeting with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, symbolically in Berehove – a city with a Hungarian majority population, in early June,"
According to him, the goal of such a meeting should be to help the Hungarians of Zakarpattia and create conditions for their return home after the war ends.
Magyar also called on Ukraine to expand the rights of the Hungarian minority, particularly in the areas of culture, language, local self-government, and education.
"It is time for Ukraine to lift the restrictions on rights, and for the Zakarpattia Hungarians to have their cultural, linguistic, administrative, and educational rights restored,"
At the same time, the politician acknowledged that the changes in the field of education announced by the Ukrainian government for 2025 are a positive signal, but called them insufficient.
According to Magyar, if these issues are resolved, Kyiv and Budapest will be able to begin a new stage of bilateral relations.
"If we can sort out these issues, we will definitely open a new chapter in the relations between Ukraine and Hungary,"
