India recorded its fifth driest June since 1901 due to a delay in monsoon rains. This is reported by UNN citing Reuters.
Details
According to the meteorological service, the country recorded its driest June in more than a decade and the fifth driest since records began in 1901. Rainfall during the monsoon period was 39.8% below the long-term average.
The rainfall deficit caused by the delay in the onset of the annual monsoon slowed the sowing of summer crops such as rice, corn, cotton and soybeans. It also led to unusually hot weather in some areas of the northern plains, with maximum temperatures in some regions exceeding 42 degrees Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit)
Also, according to the meteorological service, in June India received 99.5 mm of rainfall against a norm of 165.3 mm, as the monsoon reached the southern state of Kerala three days late, and its progress through the western agricultural regions stalled for about two weeks.
Recall
The most severe heatwave in Europe's history earlier this week set new temperature records in the eastern parts of the continent - according to WHO estimates, already linked to 1,300 deaths.
