On July 7, 2024, a clause of the Law of Ukraine "On Media" will come into force that tightens the requirements for the use of the Ukrainian state language in Ukrainian-language television programs, allowing only short phrases or individual words in non-state languages without translation or dubbing into Ukrainian.

On July 7 this year, one of the clauses of the Law of Ukraine "On Media" comes into force, which strengthens the provisions on the use of the state language in Ukrainian-language television programs. This was announced by the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin, UNN reports.

Details

On July 7, 2024, paragraph 6 of part 8 of Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine "On Media" comes into force, which tightens the requirements for the use of the state language in Ukrainian-language programs.

"...in three months, the use of non-state languages on the air is allowed only in the stable expressions, short phrases or individual words used by program participants. And all speeches, interviews, comments, explanations, questions, individual remarks, etc. in a non-state language must be translated, dubbed or voiced in Ukrainian," said Taras Kremin, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.

He noted that this will help end the regime of Ukrainian-Russian bilingualism on television and radio, which, as the Constitutional Court of Ukraine has found, contradicts the constitutional status of Ukrainian as the only state language and violates the rights of citizens to receive information and services in the state language.

"Today, Ukrainian-Russian bilingualism is practiced on national television channels, where participants use Russian without translation, voice-over or subtitling in the state language. Starting July 17, this practice will be discontinued. There will be more Ukrainian!" - he added.

Recall

The majority of Ukrainians favor the complete elimination of the Russian language from official communication after a full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
