In the United States, several people have been injured by alligator attacks in central Florida over the past week, with the latest attack resulting in the death of a 31-year-old woman, UNN reports citing CNN.
Details
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), serious encounters with alligators remain relatively rare, but there have been three attacks in the last seven days. Two of them occurred within 24 hours of each other, reports WESH.
The victim of the latest attack stopped to swim with her boyfriend and a friend in the Econlockhatchee River, north of Orlando, on Sunday afternoon when an alligator bit her, the FWC said at a press briefing.
Her boyfriend tried to pull her from the alligator's jaws, officials said.
Calling 911, a witness described the woman's injuries as "horrific." She suffered bites to both arms and later died after being transported to a hospital.
FWC officials captured a 4-meter alligator at the scene and a 4-meter one nearby, stating that either could have been responsible for the attack.
Twenty-four hours earlier, a boy fishing with his father was bitten on the hand at Nelson's Fish Camp in Marion County, reports WESH.
On June 21, on the Rainbow River in the same area — about 160 kilometers from the site of the fatal attack on Sunday in Seminole County — a diver was bitten.
According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, authorities temporarily closed the river after the first attack before wildlife officials found and removed the alligator.
According to WESH, officials captured and euthanized a 2.4-meter alligator that bit the boy.
