On Wednesday evening, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza and the “unconditional” release of all hostages. It also calls for “immediate access” to large-scale humanitarian aid for the citizens of Gaza.
The UN General Assembly resolution, which was adopted by 158 votes to 9 with 13 abstentions, is a symbolic gesture after the United States vetoed a resolution on a similar issue in the Security Council, media reports say.
Washington used its veto power in the Council, as it has in the past, to protect its ally Israel, which is at war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip after the Palestinian militant group attacked on October 7, 2023.
