Macron has accused Haiti's transitional council of being "total morons" for sacking the country's prime minister, according to a video shot at the G20 summit in Brazil this week and shared on social media on Thursday. The footage shows the French leader talking on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Rio to a man who accuses Macron and France of being responsible for the situation in Haiti.
Haiti's transitional council ousted then-Prime Minister Garry Conille just five months after he took office, a move Macron called "horrible" in the video.
"They are total morons," Macron said, referring to the transitional body, adding that "they should never have fired him.
Condemning these remarks, the Haitian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that French Ambassador Antoine Michonne had been summoned after "unacceptable comments.
Haiti's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship, Jean-Victor Arvel Jean-Baptiste, used the meeting to express "indignation" on behalf of the transitional council, which he said regarded the remarks as "an unfriendly and inappropriate gesture that must be corrected," according to a ministry statement.

Haiti has suffered from decades of political instability. But in recent months, the Caribbean country has seen an upsurge in violence, with gangs now controlling 80 percent of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
