Germany's National Security Council, chaired by Chancellor Merz, discussed an incident involving a drone near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The Interior Minister does not rule out the involvement of foreign states and a hybrid attack.

Germany's National Security Council discussed the drone incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said on Friday, UNN reports, citing dpa.

The council held a telephone call chaired by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Kornelius said.

Merz frequently speaks with the country's Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and other members of the government regarding the incident, he said.

The meeting took place after a drone carrying an explosive device was discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane at the airport late Tuesday.

A second unidentified object also struck a DHL cargo plane near the airport.

The investigation is still at an early stage, but Dobrindt has not ruled out the involvement of "foreign states" and warns that the incident may have been part of a "hybrid attack scenario."

Germany's National Security Council was established last year to coordinate the federal government's responsibility for domestic and foreign security.
