European Parliament calls on EU countries to impose sanctions against pro-Russian media

The European Parliament supported a resolution to counter Russian attempts to interfere in the EU elections. The document calls on the EU to impose sanctions against media outlets that are directly funded by Russia or spread Russian disinformation. This was reported by UNN with reference to the decision of the European Parliament. 

Details

MEPs say that Russia remains the main source of foreign interference and disinformation in the EU. At the same time, they recognize that other countries are also involved in spreading propaganda.

The document calls for a joint and long-term counteraction to disinformation in the EU.

The resolution calls on the Council to include Kremlin-backed media, other broadcasting and media organizations, as well as those responsible for propaganda and disinformation campaigns in the EU, in the upcoming 14th package of sanctions against Russia 

- summarized in the European Parliament. 

The resolution was supported by 429 deputies, 27 voted against, and 48 abstained.

In particular, the EU proposes to repeat the sanctions imposed by the Czech government against the Voice of Europe, as well as Ukrainian pro-Russian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk and his close associate Artem Marchevsky.

Also, in the European Parliament want mandatory security training for MEPs and staff, appropriate security clearance, and increased staff control.

The resolution was adopted after several months of exposing several Russian attempts to interfere in EU politics to spread Russian propaganda. 

Parliament notes that some MEPs were paid to spread Russian propaganda and that several participated in the activities of the pro-Russian media outlet Voice of Europe.
