Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina reached the semifinals of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, defeating world number two Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) in the quarterfinal match. This was reported by UNN.

In the first set, Svitolina lost three consecutive games and was unable to close the gap, failing to convert a single break point. The set ended with a score of 6:2 in favor of Rybakina.
In the next set, the players maintained parity until the score reached 2:2, after which the Ukrainian managed to pull ahead. The decisive moment was the fifth game on Rybakina's serve, which Elina took, eventually winning the set 6:4.
In the final set, Svitolina took the initiative—winning three consecutive games, two of which were on her opponent's serve. Elena responded to the Ukrainian number one's surge with a break of her own. The players exchanged breaks once more, after which Svitolina closed out the match for the victory—6:4.

The opponents were meeting for the eighth time, and the Ukrainian secured her fourth victory. In the semifinals on May 14, Svitolina will face Iga Świątek (No. 3, Poland).
The Odesa native won the tournament in Rome in 2017-2018. The upcoming semifinal will be her 15th at WTA 1000 tournaments and her third in the Italian capital.
As of next week, Elina will rise to at least the 8th spot in the world rankings.
