DTEK explains how abnormal heat affects power outages

DTEK explains the impact of the heat wave on blackouts in Ukraine. Due to Russian shelling, 50% of hydroelectric power plants and 90% of thermal power plants were damaged, which complicates the operation of the power system in the face of increased consumption.

Before the massive Russian shelling of the Ukrainian power system, Ukraine had a so-called “airbag” - while some power plants were being repaired, others were operating, but Russia destroyed and damaged half of the hydroelectric power plants and 90% of thermal power plants, which affects the power system especially during the abnormal heat.

This was reported by DTEK, UNN writes.

Details

Today, the operation of the energy system is highly dependent on the weather. Ukrainians have already felt it during the heat wave, when there were blackouts across the country. Before the massive shelling of the power system, we had a so-called “airbag”. While some power plants were being repaired, others were operating. For example, in summer, nuclear power units are traditionally prepared for winter. Previously, we did not experience any shortages at this time because thermal and hydroelectric power plants were operating. Now it will not work. Russian shelling destroyed and damaged half of the hydroelectric power plants and 90% of thermal power plants

- DTEK noted.

The company also emphasized that cooling systems in homes and factories work intensively during the heat wave.

This is why consumption is growing. The sun also works for us. In summer, solar power plants are most productive, and with the onset of cold weather, we need to heat our homes. Electricity consumption is growing. Daylight hours are shorter, and people start turning on more lights. This also increases the load. The conclusion is simple: the weather has a great impact on the operation of the power system, but not on power engineers. They work in all seasons to ensure that we have light

- DTEK added.

Recall

NPC Ukrenergo has announced the application of blackout schedules in all regions of Ukraine on August 19. The blackouts will last from 17:00 to 21:00 due to the increase in electricity consumption caused by the heat wave.
