In May of this year, Dong Guangping reached the waters near one of the western islands of South Korea on a 3.3-meter inflatable boat, where he was detained by the coast guard on suspicion of violating immigration laws. During the court hearing, he stated that he seeks to go to Canada, where his wife and daughters already reside.
This was his fourth attempt to escape China
Dong Guangping is a former Chinese police officer and a well-known political dissident. He has been repeatedly persecuted for his public activities.
In 2001, he was sentenced to three years in prison for "inciting subversion of state power." In 2014, he spent over eight months in custody after participating in an event commemorating the victims of the suppression of the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989.
Previously, Dong had already attempted to leave China via Thailand and Vietnam, but the authorities of those countries deported him back. He also unsuccessfully tried to swim to one of the islands of Taiwan.
Currently, the Canadian Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship has not officially commented on the arrival of the Chinese dissident.
