China has continued controversial coast guard patrols in waters east of Taiwan. A new formation of ships led by the vessel Xiushan has replaced the previous group that had been operating in the area since June. This was reported by CCTV, as conveyed by UNN.
China's coast guard stated that the patrols will continue and be intensified. Officially, their stated goal is to protect fisheries and maintain order in navigation.
However, according to observers, Beijing is thus trying to solidify its claims to these waters and establish de facto administrative control over them.
Taiwan's coast guard reported that it was monitoring the actions of the Chinese ships. According to its data, during the operation, the Chinese side also communicated with merchant vessels passing through the area.
At the end of June, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom expressed concern over China's actions.
"These actions threaten regional stability, freedom of navigation, and the safety of international maritime traffic," reads a joint statement by the diplomatic missions of the three countries in Taiwan.
Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory. In recent years, China has regularly conducted military exercises and other operations near the island, increasing pressure on democratic Taiwan. Chinese authorities have repeatedly stated that they are ready to take control of the island, including by military means.
