The National Gallery's new exhibition "The Last Caravaggio," which runs from April 18 to July 21, 2024, at London's National Gallery, sheds light on the artist's work.
"The Martyrdom of St. Ursula," the last work by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, was painted in 1610. That same year, the artist died while returning to Rome after receiving a papal pardon for murder. Particularly interesting is that The Martyrdom of St. Ursula includes a self-portrait of Caravaggio himself, who appears as a helpless spectator peering over the saint's shoulder.
For hundreds of years this painting was thought to be the work of one of Caravaggio's followers, but in the 1980s, after the discovery of an archival letter with details of its commission, it became known that it belonged to Caravaggio's hand. The painting was last seen in the UK some 20 years ago. A letter from the Archivio di Stato (Naples State Archive), which confirmed the ownership of the work and records some of the stages of the painting's creation, will also form part of the planned exhibition and will be shown in the UK for the first time.
