President Joe Biden and his senior staff are debating whether to grant early pardons to figures who may face hostility from the new Trump administration.
The Biden administration is concerned that US President-elect Donald Trump and other members of his team have threatened to pursue their political opponents.
The pardon discussions reportedly included the names of Anthony Fauci, who is responsible for responding to COVID-19, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, who called Trump a "fascist," California Senator Adam Schiff, who led the investigation into Trump's first impeachment, and former Republican and Trump critic Liz Cheney.
"These talks (about pardoning - Ed.) came after Biden announced a full pardon for his son Hunter Biden on Sunday, which caused a negative reaction from both parties, in part because Biden had previously stated that he would not pardon his son. This week, White House press secretary Karin Jean - Pierre told reporters that they expect new pardons from Biden before the end of his term," the publication adds.
