Day of Remembrance of the Seven Sleepers of Ephesus and the Venerable Martyr Eudokia
According to the new (New Julian) calendar, on August 4, the memory is honored of the youths who, according to legend, slept in a cave for over a century, fleeing persecution of Christians, as well as Saint Eudokia.
Among the people, this day was called "Yavdokha Sinukha" or "Malynivka". It was believed that on this day rains often fall, spoiling the mown hay, so peasants hurried to hide it in barns. Also, wild raspberries were massively collected in the forests.
For those who follow the old (Julian) calendar: on August 4, the Day of Remembrance of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Mary Magdalene is celebrated. In folk tradition, it is "Maria Yagidnytsia" or "Maryinka".
On this day, women traditionally did not work in the field but went to the forest for berries. It was also considered favorable to collect dew in the morning to wash with it for preserving beauty.
