On August 24, Ukraine celebrates its main national holiday — Independence Day. Around the world, this day is observed as International Alopecia Areata Day, reports UNN

Independence Day of Ukraine

The country's main national holiday, established to commemorate the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR of the Act of Declaration of Independence of Ukraine in 1991. Ceremonial events, tributes to the memory of freedom fighters, and patriotic activities take place in all cities.

International Alopecia Areata Day

 A campaign to raise public awareness of the autoimmune disease that causes hair loss and to support people affected by it.

Day of Engineering and Technical Professionals

Day of Hieromartyr Euplus  

According to the new calendar, on August 24 Orthodox believers commemorate Hieromartyr Euplus, who suffered for the Christian faith during the reigns of Emperors Diocletian and Maximian, as well as Venerable Martyr Zinaida. Venerable Theodosius of the Caves is also commemorated. In the folk calendar, this day was often called "Euplus Day" or the day for gathering early apples and preparing cellars for the cold weather.

According to the old calendar: on August 24, people commemorate Saint Martyr Archdeacon Lawrence (Lawrence Day). People believed that calm and quiet water on Lawrence foretold a warm autumn, while heavy rains indicated a harsh and rainy winter; traditionally, girls also collected morning dew on this day for beauty and health.
