Two Ukrainians with influenza have died since the beginning of the epidemic - Center for Public Health

Since the beginning of October, 1.5 million Ukrainians have contracted SARS, which is 35.7% more than in the same period of the 2022-2023 season. Two deaths among patients with influenza were also reported. This is stated in the information bulletinand the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health, UNN reports.

There were 2 fatalities among patients diagnosed with influenza: in one case, RNA fragments of influenza A viruses were detected that were not subtyped, and in the second case, RNA fragments of influenza B and SARS-CoV-2 viruses were detected simultaneously, which was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In both cases, the patients did not have preventive vaccinations against influenza and COVID-19.

It is noted that the number of cases of SARS  from October 2 to December 17, 2023 (1.5 million Ukrainians - ed.) is 35.7% higher than in the same period of the 2022-2023 season.

The proportion of children among the sick is 56.1%.

The Center for Public Health at the Ministry of Health also noted that 118,846 people have been vaccinated against influenza, including 73,575 from medical and epidemic risk groups, which is 0.9% of the of the total target group.

Over the past week, the intensive incidence rate of ARVI, including COVID-19, is 433.9 per 100,000 people, which is 10.2% less than the epidemic threshold calculated for Ukraine and at the same level as last week

 Regional geographic spread of influenza viruses was recorded in 10 (40%) regions of Ukraine; in routine and sentinel surveillance systems, the proportion of samples with influenza A and B viruses was 9.9%.

In addition, 5,542 people received preventive flu vaccinations last week. However, 60 deaths were recorded among people who tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 antigen.

Routine surveillance data for week 50 of 2023 were obtained from health care facilities in all regions of Ukraine, except Luhansk.

The intensive morbidity rate was calculated based on the number of all reported cases of ARVI (influenza, adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza, COVID-19, and others).
