"There is a lack of generation": DTEK explains why power outages started at night

Ukraine is experiencing nighttime power outages due to insufficient generating capacity after Russian attacks destroyed part of its infrastructure, leading to a shortfall in meeting consumer demand at night when solar and hydropower sources are unavailable.

The blackouts occur at night because the Russians destroyed part of Ukraine's generation facilities, and there is not enough capacity to cover the nighttime needs of consumers. This was stated by DTEK's executive director Dmytro Sakharuk during a telethon, UNN reports.

Details

He explained that Ukraine has lost 9 GW of capacity. According to him, part of the generation, including solar panels, does not work at night, while consumption at night does not decrease.

In general, this is the basic generation that has been working and can work at night. Since the sun does not work at night and hydroelectric power plants pump water, electricity production falls, while basic consumption remains. Because of this, we have to turn off the lights both day and night

- Sakharuk explains.

Recall

On Monday, July 8, all regions of Ukraine will have stabilization blackouts throughout the day. Ukrenergo adds that there will be four simultaneous blackouts.
