US President Biden has authorized Ukraine to strike russia with long-range missiles. This was reported by The New York Times, according to UNN.
Details
President Joe Biden has authorised Ukraine's first use of long-range missiles supplied by the United States to strike russian territory.
According to US officials, the weapons will likely be used against Russian and North Korean troops to protect Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region of western russia.
Biden's decision represents a major shift in US policy. The change came two months before President-elect Donald Trump took office, pledging to limit further support for Ukraine.
According to officials, Ukraine's permission to use the long-range missiles, known as Army Tactical Air and Missile Systems (ATACMS), was granted in response to Russia's surprise decision to engage North Korean troops in combat.
Although officials said they did not expect a dramatic change in the course of the war, one of the goals of the policy shift, they said, was to signal to the North Koreans that their forces are vulnerable and that they should not send more of them.
The officials said that while the Ukrainians would likely initially use the missiles against russian and North Korean troops threatening Ukrainian forces in Kursk, Biden may allow them to use the weapons elsewhere.
