The number of consumer loans in Ukraine remains at the same level as before the large-scale invasion of Russia - economic expert

Despite the war in Ukraine, the number of consumer loans has hardly changed and remains at the level it was before the large-scale Russian invasion. However, banks are currently reluctant to lend to businesses. This opinion was expressed by economic expert Oleg Pendzin in an exclusive commentary to UNN.

At the moment, if something is taken out, it is taken out either under the state program "Affordable Loans 5-7-9" or through the "eHouse" program. Today, no more consumer loans are taken out directly than before - maybe even a little less, so from this point of view, the interest rates currently offered by banking institutions are extremely high

- said Penzin.

According to him, there is a category of people who invariably take out quick loans from financial institutions and, so to speak, "do not get out of the debt hole." In addition, he said, there are those who use consumer loans from banks, regularly repay them, and balance them.

This segment, according to Penzin, has not changed much due to the war.

Lending is also used by individual entrepreneurs who work within the framework of their business. However, according to the expert, it is more profitable and safer for banking institutions to invest in government bonds or NBU certificates of deposit.

"Today, it is not profitable for banking institutions to lend to businesses. And this is an extremely difficult problem to solve at the state level, because at the moment banking institutions are not interested in lending to businesses, it is risky and problematic. It is much easier and simpler to take government bonds guaranteed by the state or NBU certificates of deposit," Pendzin explained.

Olena Sosedka, co-founder of Ukraine's first fintech ecosystem Concord Fintech Solutions, told UNN in an exclusive interview what to look for to protect yourself from losing money. Among other things, the expert advises to always rely on the worst-case scenario when obtaining a loan. In particular, it is worth assessing your own ability to repay the loan in the face of reduced income or unforeseen expenses.
