The pearl was discovered in the River Tay by William Abernethy, who is considered the last pearl catcher in Scotland.
He found it in 1967, before a ban on this fishery was introduced in Scotland in 1998.
It is believed that the "Abernethy Pearl", also called "Little Willy", could grow in its shell for more than 80 years.
Weighing 2.8 grams, it is the largest freshwater pearl found in Scotland in modern history. However, it is smaller than the "Kelly Pearl" discovered in the 1540s, which adorns the Scottish crown.
Abernethy, who died three years ago at the age of 96, never specified the place where he found the pearl.
