Ukraine's destruction of the Russian ferry Slavyanin in the port of Kavkaz will create additional logistical problems for Russia in supplying the occupation forces in southern Ukraine and exporting liquefied petroleum gas. This is stated in a new report by the British Ministry of Defense based on intelligence, UNN reports.
Details
On July 23, 2024, Ukrainian forces damaged the Slavyanin rail ferry in the port of Kavkaz, Russia. This strike will almost certainly create additional logistical problems for Russia in supplying the occupation forces in southern Ukraine and regional exports of liquefied petroleum gas
As noted, the Slavyanin vessel has the largest capacity of the three rail ferries in the Kerch Strait between Russia and the Crimean peninsula after the collision in late 2023 as the only rail ferry.
According to British intelligence, prior to its redeployment, the Slavyanin was most likely transporting liquefied gas through the Kerch port before being exported.
"If the ferries do not work, even temporarily, it is likely to increase costs and also reduce Russia's flexibility in transporting fuel, ammunition and equipment across the Kerch Strait. It is likely that Russia will now have to risk running fuel trains across the Kerch Bridge, something it has been trying to avoid since the first attack on the bridge in October 2022," British intelligence believes.
