Keir Starmer has officially resigned as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, BBC reports, writes UNN.
After meeting with the King, Keir Starmer officially resigned as Prime Minister
In its statement, Buckingham Palace said: "Sir Keir Starmer, Member of Parliament, had an audience with the King this morning and submitted his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept."
"Lady Starmer was also received by the King," the statement reads.
King Charles III shook hands with Starmer as he resigned, the publication notes.
It is reported that this took place in the Chinese Dining Room of Buckingham Palace.
"My work is done," said Starmer, delivering his final speech as Prime Minister of Britain.
In his final address in office, Starmer also wished all the best to his successor, who is to be Andy Burnham, adding: "I leave with goodwill, I leave with a smile, and I am proud of everything we have achieved."
King Charles held an audience with Starmer, after which he is to receive Burnham at Buckingham Palace to invite him to form a government.
Burnham will then deliver his own speech on Downing Street.
The expected new Prime Minister of Britain became the leader of the Labour Party on Friday.
After Burnham assumes office, he will begin appointing and dismissing ministers - the UK's junior minister for prisons, parole, and probation, James Timpson, has already resigned this morning.
