As stated, Keir Starmer announced his resignation from the positions of Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.

Starmer stated that the question his party is asking itself is whether he is best placed to lead it into the next election.

He says he has "heard the answer" of his party to this question and "accepts it with respect".

Every decision he made, he said, was about "putting the country I love first".

"I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," he noted.

Starmer said he spoke with King Charles III this morning to inform him of his decision to resign.

He has asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set a timetable under which nominations for the leadership will open on July 9 and be completed before the summer recess.

This will mean that a new leader will be appointed before the British Parliament returns to work in September.

Until then, he will remain in the position of Prime Minister, he noted.

Andy Burnham, who could replace the UK Prime Minister, is reportedly in Westminster today to be sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Makerfield after winning the by-election last week.
