Researchers in Finland have created cells that cannot turn cancerous, enabling the development of new safe cell therapies.

Researchers in Finland have created a cell in which cancerous mutation cannot occur. The discovery will allow to develop new safe methods of cell therapy, reports the University of Helsinki. This is reported UNN with reference to Yle.

Details

In Finland, researchers have succeeded in creating cells that cannot turn into cancer cells. This method allows for new, safe cell-based therapies, according to a press release from the University of Helsinki.

The method was developed by researchers at the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital.

Previously, there was a high risk associated with these cells because the immune defense also controls the onset of cancer. Now this risk is very low or non-existent

- explains the head of the research team, Associate Professor Kimo Vartievaara, in a University of Helsinki press release.

The researchers first investigated whether cell growth could be regulated by an externally administered substance. When they succeeded, they further determined whether the cells functioned normally.

- We created insulin-producing beta cells from stem cells that were transplanted into experimental animals. The cells take care of the animals' blood sugar balance throughout the experiment, i.e. for almost six months," says Rocio Sartori Maldonado, a doctoral student at the University of Helsinki.

The cells are also able to differentiate into other types of tissues in a perfectly normal way, and we haven't noticed any other difference in them than the fact that division cannot succeed unless we want it to

- notes the specialist.

Stem cells are very primitive cells, as they need to be able to divide abundantly and develop in many different directions. Work leader Kirmo Vartiovaara says that the research team's solution allows the cells to grow efficiently during production, but it can also be stopped at the right moment, for example after transplantation.
