Two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.1 and 6.9, respectively, occurred off the coasts of Venezuela and Japan within minutes of each other. Local authorities have issued a warning about a possible tsunami threat, local media report, writes UNN.

According to preliminary data, the epicenter of the earthquake in Venezuela was located near the city of Morón, and the hypocenter lay at a depth of about 10 km. Several injuries are reported, as well as partial destruction of at least several residential high-rise buildings. After the tremors, a tsunami warning was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Almost simultaneously, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9 occurred off the coast of Japan's Iwate Prefecture. Tremors were recorded in the Pacific Ocean, after which Japanese authorities declared a tsunami threat and began monitoring possible consequences of the natural disaster.
