On Tuesday, March 26, Ihor Rafailovych Yukhnovsky , a theoretical physicist, politician, and honorary citizen of Lviv, died at the age of 98. This was reported by UNN with reference to a statement by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi.

In 1991, Ihor Yukhnovsky was a candidate for the presidency of Ukraine and came fifth in the election. He also headed the People's Council, an opposition party to the communist majority of the first parliament, and was a member of the Ukrainian parliament of the first and fourth convocations.
Later, from October 1992 to 1993 , he served as the First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine.
In 2005, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine. Ihor Yukhnovsky co-founded the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and served as its chairman from 2006 to 2010.
Ihor Yukhnovsky is also the Honorary Director of the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honorary Doctor of the Bogolyubov Institute of Theoretical Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor Honoris Causa of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.
