According to police, the violence began on Wednesday evening, when Israeli fans tore down a Palestinian flag in the city center. This triggered an online gathering of local taxi drivers who allegedly planned a response. Later, police escorted a group of Israeli fans to a casino where about 400 people had gathered to ensure their safety.
On Friday, the Amsterdam police announced the launch of a major investigation into the numerous incidents of violence that led to the hospitalization of five people. In response to the unrest, the city banned all demonstrations for three days, and police were given extraordinary powers to ensure security.
