Today, Georgia will hold elections for a new president. This is reported by AFP, UNN reports.

Details

Mikheil Kavelashvili, a candidate from the anti-Western ruling Georgian Dream party, is considered the expected winner.

Incumbent President Salome Zurabishvili, whose term expires on Monday, has said she will not step down. Her stance has heightened tensions in the country, which has been the scene of large-scale anti-government protests for months.

Recall

Demonstrations in Georgia began after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced the suspension of membership negotiations with the EU. Zurabishvili supported the protesters, opposing the government's decision.

The Georgian Dream party won the parliamentary elections in October, which the opposition and a number of Western observers called fraudulent. As a result, opposition MPs boycotted the parliament and refused to participate in today's vote.
