In central Colombia, unidentified gunmen shot and killed the former mayor of Cubarral, Rogers Devia, and his assistant, Eder Cardona. The deceased politician was an ally of presidential candidate Abelardo de la Espriella. This was reported by AP, according to UNN.
Details
The attack took place in a rural area of the Cubarral municipality, located approximately 170 kilometers south of the country's capital, Bogotá.
Rogers Devia led the city from 2020 to 2023. His death was reported by the Ombudsman's Office of the Meta Department.
The agency noted that the assassination could negatively impact the political situation ahead of the presidential elections scheduled for May 31.
"The killings could harm the exercise of political rights and democratic participation,"
According to AP, the region where the attack occurred remains a conflict zone between several armed groups, including former members of FARC.
The government stated that the motives for the attack are currently unknown
Colombia's Interior Minister Armando Benedetti reported that investigators have not yet established the reason for the attack on Devia.
He also stated that police recently prevented another attack in the same region—at that time, the target was a staff member of presidential candidate Paloma Valencia's team.
At least six candidates are expected to participate in this year's presidential elections in Colombia. If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a second round of voting will take place in June.
