In a statement released by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, it was noted that a human case of H5 avian influenza was detected in an adult who had been in contact with livestock infected with the virus.
According to the agency, the patient had mild symptoms, was treated with antiviral drugs and is recovering at home.

According to the CDC, at least 65 confirmed human cases of avian influenza have been reported in the country, including at least 36 in California.
