A federal court in the US capital has obliged the administration of Donald Trump to restore the accreditation of a journalist of the Associated Press (AP) to the White House. This decision was a response to the conflict that arose after the AP refused to use the new name of the Gulf of Mexico, imposed by the presidential administration.
Judge Trevor McFadden of the District Court of the District of Columbia, who was appointed to the position by Trump himself, found the actions of the authorities to be contrary to the First Amendment to the US Constitution. According to this amendment, the government has no right to restrict freedom of speech, even when it comes to covering the activities of state institutions.
In the lawsuit, AP challenged the actions of three administration officials - press secretary Caroline Leavitt, chief of staff Susie Wiles, and her deputy Taylor Budowich. Trump's lawyers insisted that participation in the pool is a privilege, not a guaranteed right, but the court sided with the journalists.

Earlier, immediately after returning to the White House, Trump signed a decree renaming the Gulf of Mexico to "Gulf of America." Associated Press refused to use this name in its materials, which led to the removal of their journalist from the presidential pool. This automatically deprived the agency of access to daily briefings, as well as participation in the head of state's trips.
