The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don has started debates on the case of 24 prisoners of war from the Ukrainian Azov regiment.
“The prosecutor's office has requested sentences of 16 to 24 years in prison for the defendants, for all the men - in high-security institutions,” the report reads.
Nine of the defendants are women. Two Ukrainians have already been exchanged, so they are being tried in absentia. Another one, Oleksandr Ishchenko, died in the pre-trial detention center and the case against him was dropped.
It is noted that the eight women in the dock in Rostov worked as cooks and prepared food for the military. Some were captured in Mariupol, others were detained during filtration when they tried to leave the city occupied by Russia after heavy fighting in the spring of 2022.
