Canada will take part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in 2027. This was reported by the European Broadcasting Union and the Canadian public broadcaster CBC/Radio-Canada, reports UNN.
Details
Canada will debut at Eurovision in 2027, when the contest will be held in Bulgaria. The country's participation became possible after CBC/Radio-Canada, Canada's national public broadcaster, received full membership status in the European Broadcasting Union.
It was noted that Canada has a long-standing connection with the contest. In particular, Canadian singer Celine Dion won Eurovision in 1988, representing Switzerland.
Canada will become the first new Eurovision participating country since Australia, which debuted in the contest in 2015.
How exactly Canada will select its representative and contest song, CBC/Radio-Canada is to announce later in 2026.
Context
Eurovision is traditionally associated with European countries, but participation in the contest is not solely based on geography. Broadcasters that are members of the European Broadcasting Union can also join.
In recent years, the contest has been trying to expand its international audience. At the same time, Eurovision remains a platform around which political disputes arise, in particular due to the participation of certain countries in the contest.
