The United States was the only country among the 15 members of the Council to oppose this document. The resolution called for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire" by all parties to the conflict.
The U.S. side justified its veto by saying that the text of the resolution did not include a demand for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The United States insists that the terms of the ceasefire should be closely linked to Israel's security, in particular because of the need to release hostages, which have become an important part of the negotiations.
The conflict in Gaza has been going on for more than 13 months, killing nearly 44,000 people.
